XJ Front End Adjustments?

Going to be starting my XJ Lift Project tomorrow.  Any suggestions on where I should start or how I can tell where my camber should be.  I will be installing adjustable upper and lower control arms. :grinyes:

Yes Detour, UPPERS TOO!

You're going to need some gauze pads, wd-40, and some ball bearings.

It's all about ball bearings now a days.

You forgot the Big Ass Hammer! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

drive shaft angle on a 95 is probably more important than caster.

If your truck is shaking itself apart then caster isn't so important.

Get your drive shaft angle right then see ifyou can tweak the right caster without getting driveline vibs.

Everyone I've seen do it uses those angle finders, I did it by eye but I ran out of adjustment before getting it right so it's a moot point.  Going to make some mods to hopefully get me there .

If you have a double cardan joint in your front axle at the transfer case side.
You want an angle which puts your front drive shaft to front (axle side) yoke as close to zero as necessary to get rid of vibes.

If you have a single u joint at each end of your front axle
Your yoke to drive shaft angles should be the same at both ends just opposite directions.

All measurements should be done at street ride height.

it's not easy to measure and I have not been very sucessful at it myself.  If you need further details on that perhaps some of my fellow jeepers could fill you in.

By eye I have been able to mostly get rid of vibration however once I put some more adjustment in it I will be using an angle finder to fine tune.  You'll probably find a range that gets rid of vibration, within that range get your caster as best as you can. A socket on the u-joint cap might provide a flat enough surface for the angle finders (got to keep rotating the drive shaft to get the caps in the right position).

Proper caster is a nice thing to have but driveline vibration is first priority (u-joints and straps don't last very long otherwise).

I'm tackling the same issues this month. What type of angle finder are you using and where can you get one. I've tried to find some type of magnetic protractor at several auto parts stores and I've had no luck.

Where do we get one?

Home depot didn't know what I was talking about when I called. Am I asking for the right tool? I'll check the others.

Thanks.

It's home depot  they might not know what a 2x4 is if you got the wrong person.  :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Found it at roofgenious.com.  I thought they would be at one of the lowes, ace hd palces but their websites don't show them (atleast under that name)

Off to Home Depot, (with Pics) just so I can prove to them they have this(or not)!

Great topic Kakirubi.

This post will save me more than a few headaches, I'm sure, seeing as how this is my first lift install. You guys rock!! Say good bye to low- slung, teenie-wheeled ZJ March 1st.

Got it!

In Southington's Home Depot, they're in the tool crib next to the stud finders. Interesting though - they don't show up in their computer, no sales associate recognized the photo of one, yet - there they were, on the rack!! Good help is SOOOOO hard to find.

If anyone else needs one of these,Home Depot carries the  'Empire - Magnetic POLYCAST Protractor, #36, sku#15812 00036', if that helps narrow down the search.

They DEFF have this at the depot...look in the tool crib near the levels and squares.

Good luck,
CW
