xj, yj...?

hi i was just wondering what the difference is between all of the "j"s. I just purchased a 95 wrangler and was wondering what it is. Thanks a lot
 
87-95 Wrangler = YJ
before 87 = CJ (wrangler style)
97- Now = TJ
Cherokee = XJ
 
what you've got there is a yj...

I believe (somebody correct me if I'm wrong)

cj was pre-wrangler, cj-7 went until 85 or 86 I believe
yj is wrangler 87-95
tj is wrangler 97-05
xj is cherokee (not sure the year range)
zj is grand cherokee

I'm sure somebody else will jump in and correct me, and/or fill in the rest.
 
well, i don't know about yours, but my mind ain't all that great ... especially in the morning.

CJ-6 - Another Jeep built by Willys and AMC, this one has a 101" wheelbase. they were built from 1955 - 1975 and had export production up til 1981. only production number I have is 50,172 which sounds aweful low to me for that many years
CJ-5A/CJ-6A - Kaiser Elevated the Tuxedo Park package to a seperate model in 1964 ended ?
CJ-7 - Built by AMC starting in 1976, this Jeep had 93.4" wheelbase and had many offspring to its design
CJ-8 - this AMC design was known as the Scrambler, it has a 103" wheelbase and with the half top took on a truck type look. built from 1981 - 1985 27,792 were built
CJ-10 - 3/4 ton CJ Truck, export mainly to Australia
CJ-10A - Aircraft Military Tug in the States
DJ-5A - Jeep built 2 wheel drive for mostly Postal delivery, they did also built a DJ-8 similiar to the CJ-8
YJ - Started by AMC in 1986 and taken over by Chrysler in 1988, 632,231 were built up til 1995
TJ - The newest of the Jeep line for this design, started in 1997
LJ - Long wheelbase TJ
KJ - Jeep Liberty
XJ - Jeep Cherokee
VJ - 1949 thru 1951 original 2WD Jeepster

J10 - Jeep pickup truck

Wrangler = cold in winter, hot in summer, carry nothing as nothing fits.
Cherokee = Warm in winter, Cool in summer, carry everything...packmule.

and the Unlimited TJ= LJ which factory build code is actually TJ8.. but for some reason everyone calls it LJ for Long Jeep.

actually, one of the magazines took note, that in the VIN, where it says TJ for the TJs, it says LJ for the Unlimiteds.  Hence the LJ designation.

Maybe so, but they are wrong. Factory designation is TJ8.. When you are in DealerTrack (where a dealership places orders for vehicles) you order a TJ8 not LJ. I used to have access when i worked at the dealership and I ordered vehicles and unlimiteds. Every other vehicle in there was by thier desgination, TJ, WJ, WK, XJ, KJ.. etc.

Haa...  and give up the no top, no doors, haa,  and my TJ has better heat then Liz XJ

Yeah i agree about the heat in Wranglers... almost too much at times.. cooks me right out, and engine gets to temp in a matter of minutes.

Cherokee's only overheat if something isn't working right.

Never had a problem with mine.

As for no frame.  :frown: ..I'll agree with you on that

Soccer mom...that's just cruel.
