Clayton jam nut

Hey guys
As you probably know I’m trying to rejoin the best jeep club…I’m currently building a 2017 jk.. just added a 2.5 Clayton short arm on a 2door .. plenty of lift.. 35’s, tom woods front axle …..still need some armor and bumpers ..working on it ..anyways I was dialing in the toe and for some reasons my tie rod driver side adjustment jam nut is stuck on sleeve.. unfortunately I can’t find a resistance point to hold while wrenching the jam nut….Clayton offer a special tool for that ? Maybe a spanner wrench or something for the opening …otherwise lift is great , castor dialed in pretty well
Any suggestions appreciated
Thanks
Mark
I would send a pic when I can figure out how lol

Hey Mark,

Try using tapatalk, you can upload medium and small pictures to the forum through that really easily for free. It'll ask you join the membership 1000x a day, but it works just fine for free for me the last 4+ years I've used it. I haven't had a chance to run to the PO Box in Middletown yet, but I'll try to get there this week and get your app processing!

About the Clayton thing... no idea, mine have the threaded end welded to the tube, and and "jam nut" (which isn't a jam nut - ask Alan) came on the threads of the Johny Joint.

Thanks for the tap talk advice and maybe your right and it’s not a true jam nut…..it just seemed strange you could turn the tie rod you want and it just spins but when you put a wrench on that nut it adjusted ….this is my first Clayton .. I had rock krawler before this ..

I use a big pipe wrench.

I won't dig up the years of old "jam nut" posts where Alan has fun chastising us for using the wrong terminology  :rotflmao:

But, here's a summary, you can decide for yourself:

"Jam nuts, or half nuts, are a low-profile hex nut with a profile half the height of a standard hex nut. Jam nuts are used as a locknut to prevent vibration from loosening a bolted joint. Before nuts were developed with self-locking capabilities, two jam nuts would be tightened against each other so that nuts wouldn’t loosen over time"

Ok thankyou
So I’ll assume that nut is fixed and only there to turn the inner sleeve .. I’ll lock it out on other side , which is your usual floating nut...
Thanks again

Sorry for the delay .. I called Rock jock directly .. I said I couldn’t free that nut and they said of course not it’s welded…..It’s for adjustment only , locking nut on passenger side..They said they get this call all the time …tie rod is awesome and it’s the one Clayton uses on their website ..
Glad that’s cleared up

It’s welded to inner sleeve on ds…turns left or right with sleeve depending on what you want for toe
