More creative winching

Leave it on the dolly and forget about it. I lowered 2 down a hatch with my backhoe...

I really like having a door to enter the basement, but this would have been way easier to have a hatch and use a backhoe.

NIce! and nice welds!

Emily was pretty proud of those. She definitely learned a lot on this one little project.

Regarding the dolly, as much as I definitely have considered leaving it on there, I think there's other things I can use those wheels for. They were sort of pricey, I don't think I'm ready to retire them so soon.

I was going to get some 10mm tools but I have so much invested in 9mm I'm not sure it's worth it
10mm tools are more expensive to feed - stick with 9mm

10mm has its place....

Where I have NO IDEA!

Did you skid it down the ramp on its side or have it standing up on the wheels?
That looks crazy steep...

It went down on it's wheels I had the strap right in the center of the safe and I used a ratchet strap to hold the other strap in place and make sure it couldn't slide up or down. I slid it down on the wheels and when it got to the bottom I used yet another strap to pull the top of the safe towards the winch line. Once it had tensions on it, I put a pry bar under the back of the safe and popped it right up. My neighbor let the winch line the rest of the way out after I transferred the weight with the pry bar. It was definitely a coordinated effort, but it worked very well.

I didn't get any pictures of it on the ramp just because we all had a job to do. I think if I laid that safe down though, I'd never get it back up. There's no attachment point to lift from. It's hard enough just lifting it straight up to get it on the cart.

Very impressive!

Knowing that safe weighs more than the one I have thats the size of a small car I agree leave it on the dolly just in case you need to move it around in the basement........otherwise its not going anywhere!

Was reminded of this thread last night when I had to do some creative winching of my own. I’ve owned this safe for a while now and since I moved, it’s lived in the garage because I needed a way to get it into the basement. I decided over the weekend that I was going to move it this week, so first I made a cart for the safe. Actually emily welded it. It was a good project to learn on. The cart is all 3” x 3/16” angle I had in the garage someone gave me forever ago. Castors are rated at 600 lbs each and are from HF.

She did really good for her first time ever welding.

Next was to reinforce the stairs into the basement and then lay down a ramp. Stairs it supported with 2x4’s running straight down to the concrete below, didn’t want to rely on the screws going into the walls. Dropping a 1600 lb safe would be ugly. A sheet of 3/4” ply then got screwed into the stairs. Want to make sure it wouldn’t move.

After rolling the safe down the walkway and in front of the door, the winch was hooked up as it would be used to lower the safe down to the bottom of the ramp. Nice and slow and controlled. Two people and a pry bar got it over the door jam and the winch took over the rest. Seemed a little sketchy at first but was super stable and controlled the whole time. Everyone was always above the safe.

Definitely the most interesting use of the winch so far. Was glad I had it. Not sure of any other way to get it into the basement. All that’s left is to disassemble my engine hoist and bring it into the basement so I can set the safe in it’s final resting place. I’ll take the cart and repurpose it for something else. The safe will end up being sold with the house if we ever sell. I’m not ever moving it again.

And yes I know this safe is stupidly overkill, but I got it cheap I’ll have it forever. And if the house burns down around it, the contents will be fine.

If you've ever thought about putting a winch on your truck cause it could come in handy, well I've had my truck for three years and today I used the winch for the second time..

And no one even lost any fingers! Safe is now in its temporary home while we finish some preparations for its final home. I’m just glad it’s out of my garage.

Nice - did you run the cable straight through the house?
Yes sir! Parked the Jeep in front of the house, pulled the safe in the back door.

Well done!

Thought I was going to have an addition to this thread winching my washing machine up to the 2nd floor but ended up getting a helping hand instead
