Wheel Packages - Balancing Issue Beware

So PSA, from the vehicles I've purchased, built or parted out I've come across three sets of wheels/tires that appeared to be purchased packages. All three sets were balanced incorrectly. Two sets were General Grabber A/T's the other Goodyear Wranglers. One set Soft 8 Steelies the other two Alloy's. Here's what I want to point out. Many inexperienced people don't know how to properly mount and balance a tire. Many are given little to no training to do the job. I did this all through college and an "Old Cranky Guy" trained me for which I'm thankful (at least I think I am).

Anyway here are my findings:

~ Yellow dot not aligned with the valve stem - Not required but does help
~ Weights placed at 12:00 and 6:00 directly opposing one another - Huge NO
~ Weights placed at 12:00, 4:00 and 8:00 - Huge NO
~ One tire I pulled 18oz of lead off it - Really?
~ Yea the tire is off, probably a blem, I spun the tire 180 degrees on the rim and balanced with 10 oz of beads rather then my usual 6oz. Not perfect but better.

I'm not knocking the purchased packages. It's great to see them roll off the FEDEX or UPS truck. Food for thought buying locally where you can get the proper service. Especially when the "new kid" is just starting and inexperienced you can get them rectified quickly.

I have 4 mounted tires sitting behind the garage that I wouldn't be surprised were part of a wheel package.  I'm planning to take them off and remount them on different wheels.  Now I'm curious to see when I take a closer look how well the original balancing job was.
