Help me figure out why my Jeep is smoking

The other day as I was driving home from the beach my TJ started smoking from the back.  My girl friend got out to take a look but she couldn’t see anything so she went off looking for help.  I decided to keep driving but the smoking got worse and eventually I had to park it and walk home.  Any ideas what I should look for?
